June responses to our proprietary steel sector survey (40 mills, 30 steeltraders and 30 iron ore traders) point to deteriorating conditions in the steelmarket with orders, profitability, production and production plans all reportedto be worse month on month. Inventory of steel at both the mills and tradershas remained flat month on month, despite production cuts. The bright spot inthe data came from results of a survey of developers, which revealed risingsales and increasing construction activity.
